Ahmed Douma (September 1988) is a prominent Egyptian human rights defender, poet, and writer who became a symbol of resistance during the 2011 uprising.
His activism began in 2009, when he was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to one year in prison by a military court for joining a peaceful solidarity mission to Gaza. He was arbitrarily detained in 2013 under Egypt’s repressive protest law, subjected to torture, denied medical care, and held in solitary confinement for four years. In 2015, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison following an unfair trial, a verdict upheld in 2020 despite international condemnation. Though released under a presidential pardon in August 2023, he remains under a travel ban and faces ongoing judicial harassment and surveillance aimed at silencing his activism. Since his release in 2023, Ahmed Douma has continued to be a target by the Egyptian authorities.
- In 2024, he was subject to prosecution and smear campaigns in relation to his writings, statements and activism, as well as a physical attack.
- He has remained under a de-facto travel ban and may not leave the country.
The current case against Douma started in January 2026 when his home was raided and all his technical devices were confiscated. He was taken in for a 12h interrogation and was then released on bail. Current activism
Since his release in 2023, Douma has actively been raising awareness about the situation of detainees in Egyptian prisons. He was also at the forefront of the rare pro-Palestinian protests in Cairo in January 2024. Due to his chants during the protests, he was subject to a smear campaign by pro-government media. A few days following his participation in the protests, a complaint was filed against him by a pro-government lawyer, accusing him of endangering national peace and spreading false news. In July, Douma faced an online smear campaign after pro-government religious figures deemed parts of his 2021 poetry collection Curly as ‘blasphemy.’ On 5 October, the Egyptian Public Prosecutor opened an investigation into complaints against Douma accusing him of writing ‘blasphemous phrases’ in his poetry collection. On 15 October, Douma was physically assaulted by three individuals in plain clothes in an apparent targeted attack. On 10 November, the SSSP released Douma on bail of EGP 20,000 (approximately £315) after an eight-hour investigation concerning statements he made on social media earlier in November about the MV Kathrin, a cargo ship previously linked to transporting weapons to Israel, docking at Egypt’s Port of Alexandria. He was not allowed to have a copy of the case file or to receive details about the complaint that spurred the investigation.
Poetry
Ahmed Douma’s poetry collection “Your Voice Is Heard” (Arabic: Soutak Talee), published in 2012 during his imprisonment, is best understood as a work of revolutionary and prison literature—a mix of political expression from the 2011 Arab spring, and a personal testimony of imprisonment and oppression.
Douma’s second poetry collection “Curly”, released in 2013, is a deeply personal, love-centered poetry collection that captures the emotional landscape of a young poet navigating intimacy, identity, and a changing world.
Curly was printed and published during the 2021 Cairo International Book Fair, while Douma was imprisoned. However, the printing house was requested by security officials to take Doma’s poetry collection down. The collection remains banned in Egypt.
